Fancy running John O Groats to Lands End?
Whilst we run our own YMCA Challenge programme to fundraise for our services, we also love it when people go out of their way to organise themselves, take on a personal challenge and raise funds in their own way.
Steve Murphy is one of those people to whom we're grateful to. Reigate resident Stephen Murphy is intending on running nearly 1000 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
All the money raised from Steve’s run will be going to support two of our projects which help young people: 1. Our John Warrender fund, which helps our residents, like Chante in our YMCA Hillbrook House in Redhill, get back into the workplace. 2. A new outreach youth work project in Merstham to help young people, like Jordan, in Merstham.
Describing himself as ‘just an ordinary runner’, Steve will start his challenge on Monday 5 August with the aim of running 57 miles on his first day. Following that, he will cover an average of 50 miles a day.
“I’m aiming to complete the distance in 20 days – arriving in Land’s End on Saturday 24 August. But if it takes longer, then so be it,” says Steve. “I will just keep going until I’ve achieved the distance.”
The father of four currently has a ruptured tendon and a broken bone in one foot which may just slow him down a little and the injuries have hampered his last minute training sessions. However, Steve is determined to stick to his plans.
“I heard about this route from a friend six years or so ago and have wanted to tackle it myself ever since,” he says. “We were celebrating having completed the North Pole Marathon in 2006 and started talking about other crazy runs we would like to take on in our lifetimes. After that, I did the Sahara Marathon in 2007. Now this one will be another great challenge as I am a keen running club member but not a super fit athlete in any way at all.”
Steve, 56, is paying all his own expenses for the trip and his youngest son will be providing support when he sets off in Scotland, driving their car and carrying the necessary supplies.
