Sponsor Graham on his personal challenge

We're grateful to Graham Hutchings, father to Alex who attends Yip4Youth, one of our short break schemes for children with disabilities, who is cycling to raise money for our YMCA projects.

Cycling from Manchester's Velodrome to London's Olympic Park in under 24hrs, we're hoping more people can sponsor Graham to encourage him in his personal challenge!

Here's Graham's account:

"I'm raising funds for two charities that have been very supportive of us and our eldest son Alex.

Alex was born in December 1999 and it soon became apparent that he had significant health problems. He was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital in Jan 2000 to undergo life saving heart surgery.  Following the surgery which was successful, the true extent of the challenges that Alex faced became apparent and he was diagnosed with a partial deletion of chromosome 16.  At the time, he was only the 7th ever recorded case - so that wasn't exactly a lot of reference data to go on!

The impact on Alex is that he has significant learning difficulties as well as a number of physical challenges.  Alex is now 13 and lives life to full.

Unique provide support services for families in similar circumstances and the YMCA's services for children with disabilities provide a great social outlet for Alex where he can spend some time with other disabled children.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations."

Good luck Graham!

More than a marathon

Steve Murphy is taking on the challenge of his life.  Running from John O’Groats to Lands End in just twenty days!  He is doing this to raise money for Reigate and Redhill YMCA’s work with local young people.  He is being sponsored by Thurlow Clark and Run to Live.  Keep watching for updates on our Blog as Steve starts training for his Epic Event.

From all of us here at the YMCA, thank you Steve and good luck, we will be with you all the way!

Why I'm going to the Challenge Launch

Esther_Marathon_runningWhy I’m going to the Challenge Launch.

For someone that is not incredibly sporty, let alone have never done anything physically stretching, I thought that this should be the year to launch into something a bit more demanding. Why this year you may ask?

Noted on my bucket list by 30 was to have run a marathon. Its sounds a nice dream, but I had to face reality at some point! Whilst 30 seemed so long away all those years ago, I'm now at the end of my 20's and was faced with the realisation I had to do something about this goal.

Having encountered the YMCA Challenge programme this gave me my last opportunity to achieve my goal and finish my 20's era with a bang! (hopefully not literally!)

Squeezing in the Brighton Marathon 7 days before my 30th seemed reasonably comfortable to fit in the training schedule, and with the great support of YMCA staff, I am now committed to it.

So for me, the Challenge Launch will be about celebrating the achievement of putting my name down on paper, be surrounded by others to cheer each other on in whatever challenge they sign up to – whether skydiving, trekking or cycling, and encourage those contemplating the idea to actually go for it and do their mission possible! (We promise we won't force you!)

Perhaps you aren't sure what your Challenge efforts actually will do - well why not come along and see for yourself how many children and young people who are disadvantaged in East Surrey actually do rely on our fundraising and our achievement!

I'll hopefully see you there - Challenge Launch, Tuesday 15 January.
